There is a heap of great info and all sorts of people have written about all sorts of topics. I found a lot of this information really helpful but I couldn't find any really basic "outback travel for dummies" type info. So if you have stumbled across this blog and are planning to do some camping through Western Australia, for what they are worth here are some thoughts. Bear in mind that there are only two of us travelling in a 4WD with a tent, doing a lot of bush camping. If you are a family group or travelling with another sort of set up you will be facing a whole different set of issues! Going feral - your feet are always dirty (as is the rest of you). The bush camps, and a lot of the official campgrounds, are just sandy clearings so you are always walking in sand. The red dust gets everywhere - even after a nice, hot shower - by the time you have walked back to your tent you're dusty again. You really need to wear sunscreen every day here so you put this on in the morning all over, get wind blown and covered with dust all day + a ...

I'm starting to get the ignorant comments that I am a guy (which I already knew), and I am older than three of the five girls in this video. So what? You'll find no shortage of videos that show older people setting a TERRIBLE example for younger people, encouraging bad behavior, and so on. Even Will Ferrell's Landlord video has a little girl swearing for two minutes and talking about alcohol, but everyone finds that hysterical. Oh, and he's older than her by a few years I think. Please leave your ignorant comments for those who make the world a worse place. There is nothing bad or negative happening here, as you can clearly see. Well here we are in Australia, the half way point of our trip which is all a bit scarey indeed. We arrived into Sydney airport just about 2 weeks ago now where Dave's boots were promptly confiscated by Pest Control and only returned after a thorough power hosing - perhaps not the best introduction to Australia for us or the other poor people on our flight who had to suffer the smell of Dave's sweaty feet - thankfully no holes in the socks though!! We then met up with Dave's family, who had travelled out for a 2 week holiday, before hopping on a flight up to Cairns to start our 5 week travels down the east coast of Oz. We had a relaxing few days in Cairns generally enjoying the fabulous coast and beautiful weather. Thanks to the loan of Dave's parent's hire car we also spent a day in Mareeba wetlands, part of the Atherton Tableland, where we were treated to our first sight of a wild young kangaroo. Without a doubt however the main event was the day we spent out snorkling the Great Barrier Reef, which was just fantastic. Entry from: Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia Entry Title: "Climbing Mount K, Are You Mad?" Entry: "As I said in a previous post, Mount Kinabalu stood at 4095.2 meters ASL (Above Sea Level). I was starting at sea level and within 24 hours I'd be shivering triumphantly at the top, completed in four stages, this is my story and how I achieved success. Stage 1. Getting out of bed 7am, not an easy start I can tell you, I managed to get some toast with lashings and lashings of peanut butter to fill up on fuel for my walk to catch the bus. The journey was two hours long with smatterings of trying to be social and continuing with my sleep. It was tough. We arrived at Park HQ, about 1600 ASL, 88KM from KK. After an amount of bureaucracy that I've not seen for a while we were allowed to start climbing. Apparently the paper work is to do with making sure everyone that goes up makes it back down.... Stage 2. A very quick 4K I originally thought that the park HQ was the starting point of the trail, but no, myself and my happy group of travelers bounded into a minibus and were driven 4KM up a windy road to the Power Station (A real indication of how Malaysians treat their rainforest), I'm now 1866 meters ASL, almost halfway, and it's been a breeze. Interview with Franklin E. Johnson, WWII veteran. CCSU Veterans History Project

Interview conducted by Shawn Ingraham. Frank Johnson enlisted in the US Army just after his graduation from high school in 1942. Pearl Harbor had been bombed during his senior year of high school, and it was very important to him to become a part of the military. He did his basic training at Camp Edwards, Mass., where he also joined the 110th Anti Aircraft Artillery battalion. His unit was sent overseas to Europe just before Christmas of 1943, riding over on the Queen Mary with over 20, 000 other troops. Johnson's first combat experience was on D-Day at Omaha beach in France, which he describes in great detail. His unit also fought in battles for the Liberation of Paris, The Battle of the Bulge, and the battle for Remagen Bridge. After the fighting ended, Johnson's unit was in charge of helping the "displaced persons" left in Germany. Many of these people were citizens that the Germans had captured and put to work in factories, etc. for no wages. When the war in Europe was officially declared over, Johnson's unit began training for the impending battles in Japan, however, after the Atom bomb was dropped, they were instead sent back to the United States for discharge. After his discharge, he went to college on the GI Bill, and became a teacher, guidance counselor, and coach at Naugatuck High School, where he retired from.
